Have I!!!

Have you ever broken a bone?

Growing up with brothers you tend to find yourself with more scraps than you care to talk about. With all of that tumbling, I never broke a bone. Loads of sprang ankles, but not any broken bones. When I turned 30, I got my foot caught in a sidewalk crevice and broke my ankle in three places. It was the day after Christmas and we had just arrived home from church. It hadn’t snowed much that December so the side walks were clear. I had nice shoes on at the time. We were headed into the house and I never made because my foot got caught and I fell down. My friend, who was coming over for lunch saw me and said don’t get up. My foot was the wrong way. At the time my friend was Assistant DA, and she said that was the worst thing she had ever seen. Where I lived at the time, was at a major intersection and an ambulance always sat diagonally across the street. They saw me go down and didn’t get up, immediately rushed over. They rushed me to the hospital where I was seen by an orthopedic surgeon who kept asking me what I did for a living, because he thought, I won’t be doing it for a long time, if ever. My break was that bad. I’m in pain from the splint put on my leg from the ambulance team. And thinking, what is all this hoopla about, just take this thing off my foot already! They did and the doctor had my Mom hold my hand and a nurse hold the other and he turned my foot back, after the initial shock wore off, I felt fine. He said, I need to get you prepped for major reconstructive surgery. Still in shock, okay. I went in and was put under, shortly after, the doctor woke me up singing, it’s a miracle; it’s a miracle!!! Your foot landed so neatly in place that I have decided to put a cast on it and see you twice a week to make certain that it heals properly.

Of course those two days I had to see him, it snowed and quite heavily too. But, I survived my first broken bone which took 2 years to heal because the rocking joint of the ankle heals by walking on it and a fractured tibia heals by being off of it.

Now problem today, accept I can tell when the barometer changes.

Just keep moving
